NvSEA is presenting a 7-hour CE event that is open to all tax professionals, whether you are an EA, CPA, or AFSP.
This most popular event has been a mainstay for NvSEA for the past 25 years. Returning again this year are Cathy Clow and Bert Hartmann whose insightful classes never cease to amaze students, We will focus on the new tax forms for 2018 tax season!
Remember, tax updates in January are always better because they’ve got all the last minute stuff. We will be ready with whatever Congress throws our way.

Our speaker will be Jennifer Brown, EA. She is an Adjunct Professor at Weber State University where she teaches tax preparers how to become EAs. Not only has she taught at the National Tax Practice Institute, but she also teaches for NAEA state chapters.
She is well known for her insights and her personality on stage which will keep you captivated while she helps you understand complicated tax laws.

Businesses from Basic to Basis (3 CE hours)
In this class we will cover the basics of businesses from income and credits to the new tax laws. We will also go in-depth on basis (inside and outside).
Serving those Who Serve Us (2 CE hours)
Understanding the unique tax situation of our Military members, how the TCJA will affect them and current issues with military income and taxes.
The Growing Gig Economy (2 CE hours)
As our clients start to earn more and more money through side hustles it is important that we stay up to date on brand new market trends. We will look at Air BnB, Crypto currencies, Uber/Lyft/Waze drivers, and many other developing businesses. Learn more to understand these businesses and best help our clients.

September 20th, join your fellow Enrolled Agents and their guests at this interactive workshop. We will discuss following topics:
– Understanding Elections
– Beauty & Barber Shops from an Examiner’s Point of View
– Entity Comparison
– Mid-Year Tax Updates
Beauty/Barbers – This program focuses on the beauty and barbershop profession. It looks at the employee v independent contractor issue, chair rental, and other deductions specific to this industry. The material will use the IRS MSSP as a backdrop for the discussion.
Entity Comparison – Is it better to be a corporation or a partnership? Is it better to be a C or an S? This program discusses many business issues and the differing tax consequences among the various business entities. These include items such as contributions to the entity, liquidation of the entity, sales of property, and treatment of fringe benefits.
Elections – This seminar covers a brief overview of the particular election and the procedures to make and/or revoke the election. This topic includes many elections many taxpayers may not think about as well as elections we know are elections, such as: Accrual method of reporting interest from US Savings Bonds, Mark-to-market election for traders, Section 179, Bonus depreciation, Out of installment reporting, Out of treating interest when secured by personal residence (allowing tracing), Treating trust or estate distributions in first 65 days as if they took place in the prior year, and Repair regulation elections.
Midseason Tax Update – This program contains federal tax law changes; new regulations and other IRS releases such as Notices, Announcements, Revenue Rulings, and Revenue Rulings; and recent court cases from US Tax Court and other Courts dealing with tax matters.” Many of the cases used will be ones that provoke discussion.

Covering all 4 parts of the 4797 including business use assets; depreciable and amortizable property; oil, gas, geothermal and mineral property; Section 126 property; Capital assets not reported on Schedule D, 1244 property; IRC Section 197 intangible assets; IRC Section 1221 assets held either as personal use property or for investment purposes; IRC Section 1231 business assets held over one year including 5-year look back; Section 1245 business use property; Section 1245 gain to extent of depreciation taken; IRC Section 1250 long-term depreciable real property that is not 1245 property; 179 recapture, 280F recapture; and non-capital business assets other than inventory.7216 Use, Disclosure & Conflicts of Interest (Ethics)Concepts taught will include proper disclosure, permissible disclosures programming, maintenance, and repair of software and equipment used to prepare returns, filing FAFSA financial aid forms, determining which clients are “centers of influence,” mandatory formatting and language, sample disclosures, Circular 230 conflicting interests defined, and a whole host of common Conflict of Interest Scenarios encountered by preparers.
Instructor Bio
Kevin C. Huston, EA, USTCP is the president of Blue Ridge Tax Advisors Inc., in Asheville, North Carolina. He received his B.S. degree in Business Management from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and his M.B.A. in International Business from Georgia State University in Atlanta. Kevin has earned the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) designations from The American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He is a Fellow of the National Tax Practice Institute of the National Association of Enrolled Agents. Kevin has been a nationally known tax instructor for 20 years, and has authored several tax and financial articles for professional journals.
In 2012, Kevin passed the United States Tax Court admissions exam for non-attorneys. In the history of the United States, there have been only about 350 people who have passed this rigorous exam. Kevin is admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court.

Since 2007, Melinda has been an instructor for National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP). In 2012, to encourage tax professionals in office ‘best practices’, she authored the manual “Audit Proof the Tax Office” and has recently published a second manual called “Best Practices for the Tax Office”. Melinda has a strong aspiration to support the tax professional’s many sides of interactions with clients and IRS through education.
